Auckland runner Ben Prince-Saxon has completed his 12th marathon in 12 months, with the 25-year-old taking on the challenge to raise funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand.
Prince-Saxon, who lives with cystic fibrosis, set the ambitious challenge to prove what is possible with the condition and to support the around 600 New Zealanders also living with CF.
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic condition that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, and often makes sustained exercise difficult and exhausting.
Prince-Saxon completed his final marathon this morning, and says it felt amazing to cross the finish line.
“It was an unreal feeling, something I’ve never felt before in my life,” said Prince-Saxon.
“I’m extremely proud and extremely grateful, two years ago I never would have been able to imagine doing something like this, it’s amazing.”
The achievement is even more remarkable given the Aucklander was virtually unable to exercise just two years ago, with his health dramatically improving after starting prescription medication Trikafta.
“My life has changed drastically, I now run for fun and to better my health. Two years ago before I started Trikafta I could barely get through a sentence without breaking down coughing, it’s been amazing.”
The 12-in-12 challenge has seen Prince-Saxon run the full 42.2 kilometres every month across Aotearoa and Australia, with each race dedicated to fundraising for CFNZ’s support services.
He has raised almost $22,000, with funds to help CFNZ continue providing specialist social worker support, advocacy, particularly for access to medicines, practical support and valuable connection for people with CF and their families nationwide.
“Ben has turned a personal journey into something that’s lifting an entire community,” said Simone Brown, Executive Lead of Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand.
“Every kilometre he has run helps make cystic fibrosis visible, and every dollar raised means more wrap-around support for Kiwis who are navigating a demanding condition every day,” said Brown.
Prince-Saxon’s next goal is to set a world record, and become the fastest person with cystic fibrosis to run a marathon.
